It is just for the wind up that it starts to fall apart, although slap-upwards finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it will have no great challenge from inside the way of life off its very ugly term.” [ 8 ]

The fresh new film’s journalist and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) did during the gambling enterprise and you will dated an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely controlled body language away from like and you will threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will stylishly assertive pictures (plus his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a hidden classic of your genre.” [ 10 ]

Ace activities by the Dick Powell, because a gambling family overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, because the a police inspector, in addition to within the rating . Whilst the spot pursue a common trend, the fresh characterizations is actually new plus the shows adequate so you can overbalance. Dialog are terse and you can relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney touch. Strange camera basics come-along on occasion to escalate attention and you will temporarily arrest the attention. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little lady whom brings out the brand new finest in him and you will Ellen Received ‘s the easy and you will slinky vixen just who gets your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy since villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a new ready concert tour because a tired police inspector just who ultimately closes the outcome. Significant amounts of ingesting and you can smoking is performed by every alarmed.” [ 12 ]
